Here is a guide on how to prepare baking soda and lemon water correctly, including the recommended dosage, potential benefits, and important safety precautions.
Baking Soda and Lemon Water
This mixture is a popular home remedy often used for indigestion, reducing bloating, or as a morning detox drink. However, because baking soda is high in sodium and highly alkaline, it is very important to get the dosage right to avoid side effects.
Why People Drink It
-
Antacid effect: Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) neutralizes stomach acid, which can temporarily relieve heartburn or indigestion.
-
Alkalizing effect: Some believe it helps balance the body’s pH levels.
-
Digestion: Lemon juice stimulates digestive enzymes, while baking soda can help neutralize the harsh acidity of the lemon, making it fizz and easier on the stomach.
Ingredients
-
1/2 fresh lemon (or about 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice)
-
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda (start with the smaller amount)
-
8 to 12 ounces of water (room temperature or lukewarm is best; avoid ice-cold water, which can shock the digestive system)
How to Prepare It Correctly
Step 1: Mix the Lemon and Water
Squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a glass of water.
Step 2: Add the Baking Soda
Add the baking soda to the lemon water.
Note: The mixture will fizz and bubble rapidly for a few seconds. This is a normal chemical reaction where the citric acid (lemon) reacts with the base (baking soda), creating carbon dioxide gas and sodium citrate.
Step 3: Wait for the Fizzing to Stop
Do not drink it while it is aggressively fizzing, as the carbon dioxide can cause gas and burping. Stir the mixture gently and wait about 1–2 minutes until the fizzing mostly settles down.
Step 4: Drink Immediately
It is best to drink this mixture on an empty stomach (first thing in the morning or at least 30 minutes before a meal) to get the best antacid or digestive effect.
Correct Dosage and Frequency
-
For Occasional Indigestion/Heartburn:
-
Dose: 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 8 oz of water.
-
Frequency: You can repeat this dose every 2 to 4 hours if needed, but do not exceed 7 half-teaspoon doses per day. Do not use this for more than 2 weeks continuously unless directed by a doctor.
-
-
As a General Morning Tonic:
-
Dose: 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda with the juice of 1/2 a lemon in a full glass of water.
-
Frequency: Once a day, ideally for only a few days a week. It is not recommended to drink highly alkaline water constantly, as it can disrupt your natural stomach acid (which is needed to kill bacteria and digest food).
-
⚠️ Important Safety Warnings
Do not take baking soda and lemon water if you have any of the following conditions, and always consult a doctor first:
-
High Blood Pressure: Baking soda is extremely high in sodium. Just 1/2 teaspoon contains about 630 mg of sodium, which can spike blood pressure.
-
Kidney Issues: The kidneys have to process the sodium and bicarbonate. People with kidney disease or those on dialysis should strictly avoid it.
-
Low Stomach Acid (Hypochlorhydria): If you already have low stomach acid, regularly drinking this can make digestion much worse.
-
Edema or Fluid Retention: The high salt content can cause you to retain water.
-
Medication Interactions: Baking soda can alter how your body absorbs certain medications (including antibiotics, antifungals, and heart medications). Take this drink 2–3 hours away from any prescription medications.
Signs You Have Taken Too Much (Alkalosis):
If you experience muscle twitching, nausea, confusion, irritability, or severe stomach cramps, stop taking the mixture and seek medical advice.
