Ground Beef and Gravy over Mashed Potatoes
A hearty, home-style meal — seasoned ground beef in rich gravy, served over creamy mashed potatoes.
Ingredients
For the beef and gravy:
-
500 g (1 lb) ground beef
-
1 medium onion, finely diced
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
2 tbsp butter (or oil)
-
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
-
2 cups beef broth
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
1 tsp soy sauce (optional, for depth)
-
½ tsp dried thyme
-
Salt and black pepper, to taste
-
½ cup milk or cream (optional, for creamier gravy)
For the mashed potatoes:
-
1 kg (2 lb) potatoes, peeled and cubed
-
4 tbsp butter
-
½ cup warm milk (or cream)
-
Salt and pepper, to taste
Method
Mashed potatoes:
-
Boil potatoes in salted water for 15–20 minutes, until fork-tender.
-
Drain, then mash with butter, warm milk, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy.
-
Keep warm.
Beef and gravy:
-
Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Drain excess fat if needed.
-
Add butter and onion; cook until soft, about 4–5 minutes.
-
Add garlic and cook 30 seconds until fragrant.
-
Sprinkle flour over the mixture; stir and cook 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
-
Slowly pour in beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
-
Add Worcestershire, soy sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
-
Simmer 5–8 minutes until gravy thickens. Stir in milk/cream if using.
-
Taste and adjust seasoning.
Serve:
Spoon the beef and gravy generously over a mound of mashed potatoes. 🥔
💡 Tips
-
Thicker gravy? Simmer longer, or add a cornstarch slurry (1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp cold water).
-
More flavor? Add a splash of red wine or a pinch of paprika.
-
Vegetables: Peas, carrots, or mushrooms are great additions.
-
Leftovers: Keeps in the fridge 3–4 days; reheat with a splash of broth.
