Here is a recipe for 4-Ingredient Beef Puff Pastry Twists.
These are incredibly easy to make but look and taste like an expensive appetizer from a bakery. They feature flaky, buttery puff pastry wrapped around a savory, well-seasoned beef filling. They are perfect for game day, holiday parties, or a fun lunch paired with a side salad.
The 4 Ingredients
-
1 sheet of Puff Pastry (thawed but cold)
-
1 lb Ground Beef (80/20 or 85/15 works best for flavor)
-
1 cup Shredded Cheese (Cheddar, Gruyere, or Mozzarella—or a mix!)
-
¼ cup Seasoning/Sauce (Steak sauce, Worcestershire sauce, or BBQ sauce)
Note: Because we are keeping the ingredient list extremely tight, the seasoning comes from the sauce and the beef itself. A little salt and pepper and an egg wash are considered “freebies” in most kitchens, but they are technically optional!
Instructions
1. Prep the Oven and Pan
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Cook the Beef
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it up into very small crumbles with a wooden spoon.
Once fully cooked and no longer pink, drain the excess grease.
Turn off the heat and stir in the ¼ cup of your chosen sauce (steak sauce or Worcestershire is highly recommended for that classic beefy flavor). Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
Let the meat cool slightly—you don’t want to put hot meat on raw puff pastry or it will melt the butter in the dough.
3. Roll Out the Pastry
Lightly flour a clean countertop. Unfold your thawed puff pastry sheet. If it isn’t already a neat rectangle, roll it gently with a rolling pin to smooth out the creases.
4. Assemble (The “Sandwich” Method)
-
Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese down the center third of the pastry.
-
Pile the cooked beef on top of the cheese, pressing it down firmly.
-
Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the beef.
5. Cut the Strips
Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, slice the pastry into 8 to 10 horizontal strips. (You are cutting strips that contain the filling in the middle of each one, leaving dough on the left and right sides).
6. Twist!
Pick up one strip. Holding both ends, gently twist the strip 2–3 times like a corkscrew, tucking in any beef that falls out. Lay it flat on the baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining strips.
7. Bake
For a golden-brown, shiny finish, whisk one egg with a tablespoon of water and brush it lightly over the exposed dough of the twists (this is highly recommended!).
Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until the pastry is deeply golden brown and puffed up.
8. Rest & Serve
Let the twists cool on the pan for 5 minutes before moving them. They are best served warm, dipped in ranch, extra steak sauce, or a creamy horseradish dip.
Tips for Success
-
Keep it COLD: Puff pastry works on the principle of cold butter creating steam in the oven. If your kitchen is hot, pop the unbaked twists in the fridge for 10 minutes before baking. If the dough gets too warm or greasy while twisting, the pastry won’t puff.
-
Drain the Beef: Do not skip draining the grease. If the beef is wet, it will make the bottom of the puff pastry soggy.
-
Sauce Variations: Want to change the flavor profile? Use 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning mixed with 2 tablespoons of water for a Tex-Mex twist, or use marinara sauce and mozzarella for an Italian pizza twist.
-
Make-ahead: You can assemble the twists on a baking sheet, cover them with plastic wrap, and refrigerate them for up to 4 hours before baking. Bake them straight from the fridge!
