cheesy ground beef puff pastry squares (sometimes called beef puff pastry pockets or cheeseburger squares).
Cheesy Beef Puff Pastry Squares
Ingredients
- 500 g (1 lb) lean ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional, for extra flavour)
- 1½ cups (170 g) shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
- Cook the ground beef and onion in a large skillet over medium heat until the beef is browned. Drain any excess fat.
- Stir in the garlic, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook for 1 minute, then remove from the heat and let cool slightly.
- Roll out the puff pastry slightly if needed.
- Place one sheet of pastry into a greased or parchment-lined 23 × 33 cm (9 × 13 inch) baking dish.
- Spread the beef mixture evenly over the pastry.
- Sprinkle the cheddar cheese evenly over the beef.
- Place the second pastry sheet on top and press the edges to seal.
- Brush the top with beaten egg.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and deep golden brown.
- Let rest for about 10 minutes before cutting into squares.
Optional additions
- Dill pickle relish or chopped pickles
- Cooked bacon bits
- Dijon or yellow mustard mixed into the beef
- A little ketchup drizzled over the filling
- Monterey Jack or mozzarella mixed with the cheddar for extra meltiness
Serve with fries, a salad, or your favourite dipping sauces like ketchup, burger sauce, or ranch. The leftovers also reheat well in an oven or air fryer to keep the pastry crisp.
