Earwax, or cerumen, is often viewed as a nuisance—something to be swabbed away and discarded. However, medically speaking, earwax is not a sign of poor hygiene. It is a finely tuned secretion designed to protect, lubricate, and clean the ear canal.
More importantly, the color, texture, and consistency of your earwax can act as a biological report card, offering clues about your genetics, environment, and overall ear health.
Here is what your earwax can reveal about you.
1. The Two Main Types: Wet vs. Dry (Your Genetics)
One of the most fascinating things earwax reveals is your genetic ancestry. A single gene (the ABCC11 gene) dictates whether your earwax is “wet” (honey-colored and sticky) or “dry” (flaky, white, or gray).

Interestingly, researchers have found that people with dry earwax also tend to produce less body odor, as the same gene controls apocrine sweat gland production.

Yellow, Soft, and Sticky
This is the standard for “wet” type earwax. Freshly produced earwax is usually soft and pale yellow. It indicates a healthy, well-lubricated ear canal.
Dark Brown or Black
This usually isn’t a cause for alarm. Earwax darkens as it ages and traps dirt, dust, and debris.
